Event photography is a popular form of professional photography. Here are 10 tips that you can use to help you become an event photographer in 2025

Meet with your client

So you've been hired for your first event. Time to contact your client personally and introduce yourself. This is a great way to talk to and get to know your client early on. This way you can find an understanding of what they may be looking for in regards to photography for their event. It's also a great way for them to meet you and find out what you're all about to.

Build a portfolio and website

How are you going to get clients without something to show? Time to build a workload you can show off. If you haven't already, it's a great idea to reach out to already established event photographers and ask if you can shadow them. You never know where that could lead.

Once you have built a workload, It is time to collate a best of your photography file and call this your portfolio. This is what you will share and show off to potential clients. A portfolio should showcase your personality and style, your favorite work but also photos that will get you hired. You should also build a portfolio page within a website that is about your photography business.

Learn your equipment

Number one mistake that all photographers make at some point is using equipment that they do not know how to use. I've done this before and its a real problem because if you're on a shoot and you do not know how to use your equipment, then you're just going to fall into a pit of problems. LEARN YOUR EQUIPMENT and avoid the hassle of creating a potential problem.

Pack light but Pack right

Another problem that photographers encounter is packing too much equipment. Photography equipment is not exactly the lightest of things to carry around. If you're on an all day photography shoot, then you need to pack strategically or you might regret it. Only take with you what you need and you know what you're going to use.

Be ready for long days

One of the most popular forms of event photography is Weddings. A wedding is a long day not just for the family involved but for photographers to. Weddings are busy days and you will be rushing around all day making sure you're in the right place at the right time. You're going to get tired so you have to be prepared for that.

Learn data logging

What is data logging? Data logging is when you take your footage and create a spreadsheet about what you have shot on your camera. A data log is important for anyone who likes to keep their footage organised. You can even do this on the day during shoot if you have time. Its a great way to keep up with what you have shot. You can even use data logging to write down what equipment was used in case you need to know. Data logs can also be sent to clients if you would like them to see what is in your footage for review

Be inspired

Event photography comes in all different styles. If you're freelance, your clients may all have different ideas and styles that they want met. To meet demands its a great idea to research before your shoot and get ideas and be inspired. You can learn so much from a simple Google search on event photography, you can see what professional photographers are doing and trends there are. You may also be able to see what you can do differently to others to stick out from the crowd. You can not go wrong with a good ol moodboard.

Keep your clients close and in the know.

So you've completed your first client project and your work has been sent. What now? do you just move on and hope for a new client to come by? of course not, Now is the perfect time to keep past clients up to date with what you have going on next. You could do this by creating a newsletter which you could send out to them. The aim of the game is to stay on your clients radar. If they have hired you once, there is nothing to say they wont hire you again, You have just got to make sure they know you are there and ready for them to hire you again at anytime.

Learn batch editing

One of the most helpful tips I can give you is to learn batch editing. What is batch editing? Batch editing is copy any past editing you can place on your unedited photos. Think stock filters that you can reuse on photographs but with your own saved templates. This is a quicker and more efficient way to edit your photographs as it's likely you will be shooting atleast 200 photos per event. You do not want editing to be a long and strenuous, time consuming part of your production process, especially if you need to get your photos out before a deadline.

Dress appropriately.

You're a professional photographer and being professional through dress sense will only help on your impressions to clients. Being in a wedding environment means you should be dressed to what is expected of the guests who are attending. You should always match the tone of the event. If its a formal event, dress formally, if its an informal event, then dress casual but professional. (No swear words or graphic imagery on your clothing) Plain is always a winner.

I hope this short blog has helped you if you are trying to become an event photographer. Thank you for reading.
