In 2020 during the pandemic, I decided to dip my toes into content creation. I thought as someone who does this as a hobby in my free time, I would share some of my advice to help you get set up if content creation is something you're interested in getting into. So here we go, lets get into it.
Start a blog
First thing is first, find somewhere to start a blog, whether that be on a website or YouTube, basically anywhere you can write down your thoughts. Writing a blog is a great way to build traction towards you as a person. Your written thoughts may catch someones attention which can lead to a following, if said person enjoys what they are reading that may lead to a new person joining your community. A Content creators goal is to create a following after all and a blog is a great way to start influencing and building community.
Find a niche
What are you interested in? Are you interested in Fashion, Gaming, Sport, Movies, Journalism or something else? If you're reading this, you probably already have somewhat of an idea towards what your blog is going to be about. The goal however is to stick out from over-saturation within your chosen topic. To do this you must Niche down, find a smaller topic within the larger topic. For example, If you are into the idea of making gaming content, Then a good idea could be for example to focus on one small area of gaming like Indie games that are exclusive to a console. If you have your own selling point, then people will come.
Get familiar with social media sites
Being a content creator is not an easy role, you have to know your field. what I mean by this is, get to know where you are planning to post your content. For example If you're going to make YouTube videos, learn how YouTube works. Analytics, Algorithm, SEO, Thumbnails and more, These are important factors to understand for posting on any social media site. Getting familiar will only benefit you and will turn you into an expert in that field especially if you are ever requested to make content for someone through a specific site. Making an impression like that will massively give you a leg up from your competition.
Practice and learn new skills
If you're a content creator, you will need to be a jack of all trades. Unfortunately most content creators for many years after starting out will be managing multiple roles all at once. A Content creator is a Producer, director, editor, writer, researcher, presenter, spokesperson and more. Its a highly demanding role for what often seems like little pay off. Okay you're probably not making Citizen Kane, but you are being creative. Creativity comes from practice and learning skills. Content creation is one of the most creative roles out there as its so broad, you can do anything you want however you want to make sure you're always learning new skills. Experiment and level up as you progress, all the time. If your work looks the same after one whole year, something is wrong.
learn who your audience is
One of the most important factors to being a content creator is being someone who is seen by potentially many people. Eyes are on you and your ideas. You need to know who is watching you and how you relate to your audience. Who is your audience? If you're a sports content creator, then your audience is likely to be into sport. This is obvious. But if you're niche is about a specific sports team, then you need to learn everything about the people who support that team. Whats the average age? whats the average gender? What time of day are they most active? How do they dress? How do they act? You need to know everything, only then can you make your content relatable to your audience. Relatability sells.
Set a goal and stick to it
Content creation is not a get rich quick scheme. Unless you're incredibly lucky, content creation is likely going to be a slow but enjoyable ride. For some, Content creation may take years to break into the viral scene, For others it could be a quick ride with instant success. Content creation is an enigma and its not really truly understood how success works through making content, It just kind of happens. The only way to achieve that success though is to be consistent. Keep making stuff, Rome was not built in a day, Neither will your blog or YouTube channel be. Setting a goal is a great way to keep yourself motivated with being consistent. If you say you're going to hit 1000 subscribers in your first year, work out how you're going to do that and stick to the plan. Its hard work honestly, but if its truly your dream, then your passionate mindset should pull you through.
